Description

An intensive 2-day workshop for those who want to learn what tiny home living is all about and how to design and build their own. Through engaging image rich presentations and interactive activities students will be taken through the practical and technical processes for making their dream tiny house a reality.

What is a tiny home?? A tiny home is typically ~100-300 square feet, often built on a trailer bed, and is often built for ~$60K allowing for a debt free, minimalist, intentional and low-impact lifestyle.

What you will learn:

  • What tiny home living is all about – the bad, the good, and the gooder
  • How to plan and design a tiny home starting from the trailer up.
  • Step by step construction process so you know what you’re doing every step of the way.
  • Living systems: Heating, waste, energy and water options
  • Legalities: For the road, building codes and zoning/bylaws
  • Tons of resources for taking the leap

Learning Schedule:

On Friday evening we cover introductions, housekeeping and introduce you the tiny house movement and why it is growing with such speed.

On Saturday we cover how to start designing a tiny house, with an emphasis on THOWs (Tiny House On Wheels). Important topics we will cover will include functional home design for our cold climate, how road rules and trailers set limitations on your design, how to maximize your interior space, and we will cover a process for determining a floor plan. Loaded with the basic information to start designing, students will then replicate tiny house floor plans using supplied images of famous well designed tiny homes. Lastly, we will review tiny house utility options and products.

At the end of the day, we try to organize for students a tour of a local tiny house and/or visit a tiny house builders workshop. These will be confirmed closer to the course date.

On Sunday we cover the topic of legalities (zoning, bylaws, and building codes), and will go over the steps of constructing a tiny house. We will also be recreating our tiny house floor plans from the previous day to-scale outside on the ground! Students will get to walk through and be toured through these mock to-scale tiny houses, so they are better able to design a layout that’s a perfect fit for them.

About Food & Venue:

Complimentary coffee and tea will await you in the morning and be available for you throughout the day. After a morning of using your brain we will be serving a locally catered vegetarian lunch. Good food equals happy students. So be nourished and inspired to learn all the more!

All of this incredible goodness will be offered to you from the St. Albert Grain Elevator Parks indoor classroom, which you will find below the renovated train station. Nearby you have gorgeous walking trails, a food forest to explore, and a site rich in history and character.
